The SWAYAM unit of CU had a very humble beginning in the latter part of 2019. The unit was housed in room no. BKB 006 of the History Department of CU till 8th December 2022. From 9th December 2022, the unit started functioning from the GAD section, MCB Building. Thereafter, from September 2023 onwards, the SWAYAM unit started functioning from MCB room no. 019 (adjacent to the Office of the Honorable Pro VC, CU). Cotton University has been partnering with NPTEL right from 7 November 2019, as an active SWAYAM NPTEL Local Chapter (Local Chapter id- 3224).
Rules & Ordinances adopted so far:-
- The Academic Council, Cotton University, in its meeting dated 21st February 2020, has adopted MOOCs for Credit transfer.
- An ordinance for Credit transfer of MOOCs on SWAYAM IT Platform under CBCS has been passed by the Executive Council of Cotton University (EC resolution no. EC/2021/19/03)
National Education Policy 2020 emphasizes that online education provides a natural path to increase access to quality higher education. Therefore, Technology-based education platform, such as SWAYAM, has been better integrated with Cotton University so as to enable its students to reap the benefits of user-friendly and qualitative content.
Enrolment of students in MOOCs since 2020

During the pandemic period, for the very first time, Cotton University started adopting MOOCs for Credit transfer. In the year 2020, (JULY-DEC semester), under the UGC (Credit Framework for Online Courses through SWAYAM) Regulation, 2016, 278 students of nine departments successfully passed the final MOOCs exam, and thereupon, credit was transferred from SWAYAM to their Cotton University Grade sheets under the Credit transfer mechanism. As a result, Cotton University was adjudged by SWAYAM NPTEL as the Best Local Chapter in the Arts, Science & Commerce category in the entire country for the Jan-Dec, 2020 period.

Likewise in 2021(JULY-DEC semester), under the UGC (Credit Framework for Online Learning Courses through Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) Regulations, 2021, 735 students from nineteen departments (including Research Scholars of all Departments) successfully passed the NPTEL+ Non-NPTEL MOOCs exam, and thereupon, credits were henceforth transferred from SWAYAM to their Cotton University Grade sheets under the Credit transfer system.
In 2021 (July-Dec semester), under ADD-ON courses, 174 students of 8 Departments successfully passed the NPTEL & Non-NPTEL MOOCs exam.

In the year 2022, (JAN-JUNE semester), under the UGC (Credit Framework for Online Courses through SWAYAM) Regulation, 2021, 177 students of six departments successfully passed the final MOOCs exam, and thus, credits have been transferred from SWAYAM to their Cotton University Grade sheets under the Credit transfer system.
In 2022(Jan- June semester), under ADD-ON courses, 40 students from 3 Departments successfully passed the NPTEL MOOCs exam.
In the year 2022, (JULY-DEC semester), under the UGC (Credit Framework for Online Courses through SWAYAM) Regulation, 2021, 176 students from four departments successfully passed the final NPTEL MOOCs exam under the Credit transfer system. In the same semester, another set of 20 students from the Department of Mass Communication & Journalism successfully passed their final Non-NPTEL MOOC Exam under the Credit transfer mechanism.
In the year 2023, (JAN-JUNE semester), under the UGC (Credit Framework for Online Courses through SWAYAM) Regulation, 2021, 22 UG 4th sem & 6 PG 2nd sem students of the Department of MBBT successfully passed the final MOOCs exam, and thus, credits have been transferred from SWAYAM to their Cotton University Grade sheets under the Credit transfer system.
In 2023(Jan- June semester), under ADD-ON courses, 4 MCA students from the Department of CS&IT successfully passed the NPTEL MOOCs exam.
In the year 2023, (JULY- DEC semester), under the UGC (Credit Framework for Online Courses through SWAYAM) Regulation, 2021, i) 24 UG 5th sem of MBBT department, ii) 73 PG 3rd sem students of departments of MBBT, Hindi & Chemistry & iii) 2 PhD Research Scholars of LIS Department have successfully passed the final MOOCs exam, and thus, credits have been transferred from SWAYAM to their Cotton University Grade sheets under the Credit transfer system.
In the year 2024, (JAN-JUNE semester), under the UGC (Credit Framework for Online Courses through SWAYAM) Regulation, 2021, 27 UG 4th sem students of the MBBT department successfully passed the final MOOC exam, and thus, credits were transferred from SWAYAM to their Cotton University Grade sheets under the Credit transfer system.
RECOGNITION TO SWAYAM UNIT OF COTTON UNIVERSITY
* In the 2020 released list of the top 100 SWAYAM NPTEL Local Chapters of India (Jan+Jul 2020 semesters), the Cotton University SWAYAM unit secured the 63rd position while the Tezpur University SWAYAM unit secured the 67th position.
*In the 2021 released list of the top 100 SWAYAM-NPTEL Local Chapters of the entire country,(as per the SWAYAM NPTEL Local Chapter Ratings for the Jan+Jul 2021 semesters), only two institutions of North East India figure in the same:-
· Cotton University secured the 58th position
· Tezpur University secured the 71st position
It may be pointed out that even though the students of Cotton University did not enroll in the MOOCs in the January semester of 2021, still Cotton University managed to get the 58th position for the overall Jan + Jul 2021 semesters, & that too, simply based on enrolment in the July 2021 semester."
*In the UGC report for credit transfer for non-technical MOOCs through SWAYAM for the July 2021 Semester, published on 3rd June 2022, COTTON UNIVERSITY (Id: U-0675) was ranked 5th amongst the 338 Indian Universities.
In 2022, SWAYAM-NPTEL has given recognition to Cotton University as the “Best Local Chapter in Arts, Science & Commerce category” among the local chapters outside the top 100 Local chapters based on performance in NPTEL MOOCs for the July-December 2022 semester.
